Skin Cycling 101

Skin cycling involves a specific skincare routine where you alternate between different types of products to promote healthy skin. Here’s a breakdown of the routine into manageable steps:

Step 1: Exfoliation Day

  1. Start with a gentle cleanser to clean your face and remove any makeup or impurities.
  2. Apply a chemical exfoliant (like glycolic acid or salicylic acid) to your cleansed and dry face. Follow the instructions on the product carefully to avoid over-exfoliation.
  3. Allow the exfoliant to sit on your skin for the recommended time (usually a few minutes) and then rinse it off thoroughly.
  4. Follow up with a hydrating and soothing toner to balance your skin’s pH levels.
  5. Apply a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated.

Step 2: Retinol Day

  1. Cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser to prepare your skin for retinol application.
  2. Wait for your face to be completely dry before applying a small amount of retinol. Avoid using retinol around the eye area.
  3. Allow the retinol to absorb into your skin for a few minutes.
  4. Apply a nourishing and moisturizing night cream or lotion to help counteract any potential dryness or irritation caused by the retinol.

Step 3: Recovery Days

  1. On these days, focus on gentle skincare to allow your skin to recover.
  2. Cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser to refresh your skin.
  3. Apply a hydrating and calming serum to provide extra moisture and comfort.
  4. Follow up with a richer moisturizer to help your skin recover and replenish.
  5. Avoid using any strong active ingredients or exfoliants on these days.

General Tips:

  • Always apply sunscreen during the day, especially on exfoliation and retinol days, as these products can increase sensitivity to the sun.
  • Avoid using petroleum-based products over retinol, as they might interfere with its effectiveness or irritate the skin. Instead, opt for non-comedogenic and hydrating products.
  • It’s a good idea to patch-test any new products before introducing them to your routine to avoid adverse reactions.
  • If you experience irritation or discomfort at any point, consider consulting a dermatologist or skincare professional for personalized advice.

Recommended products:

A gentle cleanser like this one to remove surface dirt, oil and makeup.
A high quality chemical exfoliant to remove dead skin and allow retinol and other products to penetrate skin more deeply.
A product with retinol to address fine lines, sundamage, scarring, and acne. Retinol can be irritating so test a small amount on skin first and if you have a bad reaction, talk to a dermatologst.
